Event Details

DOVA and the MIT Public Service Center are pleased to host Australian volunteer engagement expert Martin J. Cowling from People First-Total Solutions for interactive workshops for volunteer leaders on "Creating a Pro-Volunteer Culture" and "Fundamentals-The Essentials of a Volunteer Program" at MIT on Thursday, March 15, 2012.

To increase overall organizational support for volunteers, the morning session (9am-12noon) on "Creating a Pro-Volunteer Culture" is for broad audiences (volunteer leaders, organizers, executive directors, managers, board members) who will learn about and discuss

  • The impact and value of a pro-volunteer culture
  • Why culture is important to an agency/group
  • The elements of an agency/group culture
  • What an ideal pro-volunteer is
  • Specific actions everyone working with volunteers can  take to strengthen pro-volunteer culture at his/her agency/group

So that our volunteer programs function most effectively, "Fundamentals-The Essentials of a Volunteer Program"  will be the afternoon session (1-5pm). Participants take inventory of the specific strengths and weaknesses of their volunteer programs in the context of key characteristics of an effective service enterprise that focuses volunteers on performing critical work, and then they will identify and plan what is needed to improve their situations.

Register by 2/29 for $150 to attend the full day with continental breakfast and "Taste of New England" buffet* lunch, and receive optional 50% discount on 2011-12 DOVA dues (regularly $40).

Register by 2/29 for $100 to attend for a half day with the meal that immediately precedes your session.

In order to strengthen agency/group-wide pro-volunteer support, additional employees, board members, and volunteer leaders from the same nonprofit/group can receive a $25pp discount by 2/29.

Day-of/Walk-in registration on 3/15 will be $250pp for the full-day and $125pp for a half-day if space is still available.

*Buffet will feature New England Clam Chowder, Garden Salad with Apple Cider Vinaigrette, Yankee Pot Roast with Roasted Root Vegetables, Baked Scrod with Cracker Crumbs, Cranberry Bread and Parker House Rolls, and Beverages. Vegan and vegetarian pasta entree, no-lactose soup, etc. will be substituted for those who register specific meal preference by 2/29/12.

No refunds are available after 2/29. For cancellations made before 2/29/12, DOVA will refund registration fees less $25 administrative fee, Eventbrite and credit card processing fees and, if purchased, full-price DOVA dues.

If MIT closes due to a snow emergency on 3/15/12, then DOVA will refund registration fees less Eventbrite and credit card processing fees and. if purchased, full-price DOVA dues. Check MIT snow emergency status at http://emergency.mit.net/emergency/ or call 617-253-SNOW (617-253-7669)

DIRECTIONS to MIT Bush Room, 77 Massachusetts Ave., Building 10, Rm. 105, Cambridge, MA 02139

MIT is easily accessible by public transit (#1 Harvard-Dudley or CT1 bus or the Red Line's Kendall Square Station), but driving and finding affordable parking nearby are very challenging. General directions to MIT are online: http://whereis.mit.edu/map-jpg?section=directions. Building 10 is also highlighted on this map: http://whereis.mit.edu/map-jpg?mapterms=10&mapsearch=go

(RECOMMENDED) By MBTA: From Kendall MBTA station, you will need to find your way to building 10 (under the large dome that faces Memorial Drive and the Charles River) by foot. Take marked roads (i.e., Main Street to Ames St.) since you will likely encounter difficulty entering locked buildings until you walk onto the main campus (and enter the building #8 end of the “Infinite Corridor”). Enter the main MIT campus by turning right just after building #66, a 30-60-90 triangular building. Walk outdoors, parallel to buildings 56 and 66. Enter building 8 by going up a few, external stone steps. Continue walking straight on the Infinite Corridor. Pass an ATM on the right. Then arrive in Lobby 10 that overlooks the Great (Killian) Court and the Charles River, and turn right. The Bush Room will be on your immediate left, across from the ATM and adjacent to the elevators. (If you get to Massachusetts Ave., you’ve gone too far.)

If you take the #1 or CT1 bus, enter the main MIT entrance at the crosswalk at 77 Massachusetts Ave. (up the steps, past the columns). Walk straight through the lobby and enter the “Infinite Corridor.” Pass through building #7 (i.e., rooms labeled with numbers beginning with 7) and then building #3, including staircases before and after Building 3. Building #10 has a large open Lobby (which opens to Great (Killian) Court to the right). Turn immediately left at the War Memorial Wall, and then in front of an elevator bank turn left into the Bush Room. (If you reach stairs downward or building number 13 or 4, you’ve gone too far.)

(Discouraged) By Car: Directions online at http://whereis.mit.edu/map-jpg?section=directions There’s rarely free, legal parking along Memorial Dr., and most garage options are expensive and further away than if you used the MBTA. There's paid parking available at University Park Public Parking Garage (55 Franklin St. (at intersection with Green St.) at the Shaw’s). After you park, follow MBTA directions above, from 77 Massachusetts Ave. Note: Do NOT park at a metered space since you must return to move your car mid-session and might not be able to find another space.-It will be very disruptive.
